Fluency Over Coffee

A weekly refugee language exchange in Abilene !

Fluency Over Coffee is more than a language class – it’s a welcoming space where community begins with conversation. Every week, refugees in Abilene gather with neighbors over fresh coffee and doughnuts to practice English in a relaxed, supportive, and friendly setting.

Why It Matters

Learning English is one of the biggest challenges for newcomers from non-English-speaking countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, the Ivory Coast, Senegal, and the Central African Republic. By creating space for dialogue, laughter, and connection, Fluency Over Coffee helps participants:

  • Improve English fluency through real-life conversations.
  • Build confidence in speaking with native English speakers.
  • Form friendships that make settling into Abilene easier.
  • Celebrate culture while sharing stories across borders.
How It Works

When: Weekly sessions (day & time announced monthly).
Where: West Texas Rehabilitation Center – Board room (email: cstephens@wtrc.com to receive directions to the board room).
What to Expect: Small-group conversations over coffee and doughnuts, guided by volunteer conversation partners.
Who Can Join: Refugees, volunteers, and any community members interested in making Abilene a more inclusive home for all.

Our Purpose

At its heart, Fluency Over Coffee is about connection. It’s a simple idea – sharing coffee and conversationbut it creates powerful outcomes: stronger language skills, deeper community bonds, and a warmer welcome for those starting new lives in Abilene.
