LIGHT THE FLAME OF HOPE FOR DISPLACED CHILDREN IN EASTERN DRC
Overview
The ongoing conflicts in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have left millions of children vulnerable. Many have fled their homes, experiencing violence, displacement, and loss of education and necessities. Refugee Integration through Strategic Empowerment (RISE) is launching the Light the Flame of Hope campaign to provide education, psychosocial care, and essential resources to these children. We aim to restore hope and empower the next generation with opportunities for a brighter future.
The Challenge
Children in Eastern DRC face severe challenges such as ongoing conflict and displacement:
The resurgence of armed groups, particularly the March 23 Movement (M23), has intensified violence in Eastern DRC, especially in regions of South Kivu and North Kivu (Bukavu and Goma). Rebel forces have seized critical areas, leading to widespread displacement of over 6.9 million people (UNHCR, 2024). Mass killings, sexual violence, and child recruitment by armed groups have escalated, with a 30% increase in grave violations against children reported in early 2024 compared to the previous year (UNICEF USA, 2024). Closed or destroyed schools have disrupted the education of an estimated 750,000 children (UNICEF, 2024). Without urgent intervention, these children risk becoming a lost generation – deprived of education, suffering from untreated trauma, and trapped in cycles of poverty and instability.
Our Solution
RISE is committed to transforming the lives of displaced children through a multi-pronged approach:
– Educational Support: Establishing and equipping learning centers, providing school supplies, and training teachers to ensure quality education for displaced children.
– Psychosocial Healing: Implementing trauma-informed care, counseling services, and child-friendly spaces that foster mental and emotional well-being. This includes recreational activities such as music, dance, football, lacrosse, hacky sacks, etc. which provide therapeutic outlets for stress relief, social connection, and confidence-building.
– Basic Needs Assistance: Distributing essential supplies, including food, hygiene kits, and clothing, to improve children’s health and stability.
Through strategic partnerships and community engagement, RISE aims to provide sustainable, long-term support to children affected by displacement and conflict.
